The Ketogenic Diet and Fasting

A ketogenic diet and/or fasting, when applied correctly, are metabolic therapies. A ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that favours fat burning for energy. Normally the body burns carbohydrate for energy, but when carbohydrates are restricted (< 25g per day to start with), the body breaks down fat instead, creating molecules called ketones. These ketones are used to produce energy inside our cells.

Fasting is another approach where metabolic benefits and anti-inflammatory effects can still occur without carbohydrate restriction. A common fasting protocol is restricting the non-eating window over night to 14-16 hours and eating for 8-10 hours during the day. Sometimes not eating for a few days or using a fasting mimicking diet (FMD) is appropriate for an individual (there are numerous protocols that can apply in individual situations).

Would a Ketogenic Diet or Fasting work for me?

Jodie has found fasting and/or ketogenic diets beneficial for many of her patients - improving a number of health conditions, including:

Ketones nourish the nervous and brain tissues, and many patients also see improved mental clarity, energy and mood. Jodie has also seen inflammatory conditions improve, with reduced joint pain and reduced IBS symptoms being the most common amongst her patients. Sugar cravings usually reduce or disappear and the skin looks and feels healthier.

She also use BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) with a TGA approved device (i.e. it's accurate) to assess her patient's lean mass, body fat and fluid balance. Being able to measure fat loss and ensure lean muscle is preserved during a patients weight loss journey is invaluable.

Do I Need to Eat Meat?

A high protein intake is not desirable for health. Adequate protein, on the other hand, is important and this can be met with vegetarian foods or small amounts of meat. While the choice is up to the individual, Jodie does advise either way guided by nutritional deficiencies and differing constitutions.

Is it Safe?

Ketosis is a normal physiological process. Most people wake up in a mild state of ketosis after not eating over night. Intentionally reducing carbs or fasting through part of the day prolongs the ketosis state, allowing insulin and blood sugar spikes to even out. Many normal weight people choose a ketogenic diet for the mental clarity and reduced hunger it provides, and also to reduce the risk of chronic disease and manage other health conditions.
